Does anyone use Content Generator in the English classroom? I have only just begun to use the software in my own school and would be interested to hear from teachers who are using it in their English teaching.

Teachers at my school use it for English - used for revision for Year 9 SATs. In fact, one of the first uses of my games was for Twelfth Night revision - see my site at http://www.twelfthnightsite.co.uk. However, this was many years ago now when I taught some English and when Twelfth Night was still a SAT option.

I'll find some more current examples as soon as I have time smile.gif

I teach 8th grade English at a Middle School in Virginia and I use "Fling the Teacher", "Multi-choice", and the "Match-Up Quiz Generator" all the time in my classes. I am probably going to buy "Grade or No Grade" - but I may purchase the whole suite. I use the games to review with my students before I guve them tests or quizzes. I use the Match-Up Quiz Generator mainly for vocabulary, but the other two are great for almost anything. The statewide standardized tests the kids take at the end of the school year are all multiple-choice, so these two games are great for making practice quizzes.

Here are links to some of the games I have used with my students:

Prefix Practice
Prefixes, Suffixes, and Context Clues
Root Words
Vocabulary - 1st Quarter
Vocabulary - 1st Quarter Part 2
Consistent Verb Tense
Vocabulary - 1st Quarter Part 3
First Quarter Mini-Review
First Quarter Mini-Review 2
Vocabulary - First Quarter Part 4
Root Words - Half-a-Min
Prefixes, Suffixes, and Root Words - Half-a-min
Following Instructions
2nd Quarter Mini-Review - Fling the Teacher
Context and Connotation - Fling the Teacher
Context and Connotation - Hoop Shoot
Figurative Language - Grade or No Grade
Poetry - Hoop Shoot
Analogy - Hoop Shoot
Analyzing Figurative Language - Multiple Choice
Analogy Relationships - Half-a-min
State Writing and Grammar Exam Mini-Review 1
State Writing and Grammar Mini-Review 2
State Writing and Grammar Exam Mini-Review 3
State Writing and Grammar Exam Mini-Review 4
3rd Quarter Mini-Review - Teacher Fling
Informational Text and Text Structures - Multiple Choice
Informational Text 2 - Multiple Choice
Informational Text 3 - Multiple Choice

Anyway, as you can see, I use the games a lot! I usually try to get one of the school's Smart Boards (the giant touch screen monitor) when I'm going to let the kids play the review games (then I can give the whole class verbal feedback on what makes the correct answers correct and what makes the wrong answers wrong), but sometimes I get the laptops for them and let them play on their own. I usually do that when I have other things I want them to do first. Then the games are a reward for finishing their other work. I have other review games, too - but they really like the Content Generator stuff (I think their favorite so far is the Hoop Shoot game, with Fling the Teacher coming in second). I also have a moodle set up for my kids and I am really looking forward to testing the Fling the Teacher SCORM with it. I just recently purchased the Hoop Shoot game generator, so I am still in the process of creating new games with it.

Thanks for looking! biggrin.gif

Caroline

Tried to access some of your games before passing them onto our English department. I cannot seem to access any of them either using IE7, which produces and error and Firefox, which just stops.

Hmm - that's weird. I can access them fine at home and at school. I don't know what version of IE we're using at school (I never looked) but I'm using 6.0 at home.

Do you want me to send you a message with the .swf files and the .html files attached? If so, which ones?

I had a thought, too - see if you can access any of these: (.html files with the .swf files embedded)

Vocabulary
Context-Connotation Hoop Shoot

I link directly to the .swf file on my website (those links in my other post were to the .swf files), but maybe you need to open an .html page with the .swf file embedded? I don't know. Unless maybe my website was down while you were trying to access the games. Anyway, I can send you the files if you want them.

I've just tried a few of the links and they all worked perfectly on our home computers. Perhaps you're experiencing a Flash issue Douglas? Can you access your own games and quizzes? Does seem a bit strange.

Anyway, Caroline - thanks for posting all these examples - great - actually fantastic - use of the ContentGenerator.net programs. biggrin.gif

Caroline

Thanks for the new links, they work perfectly. Could be a flash problem, but I normally link via the html files rather than directly to the swf. I have managend to get some of the links working on school PCs, but not others. Will work on this.

Thanks for sharing these links and I'm sure our English department will appreciate them. smile.gif

Hey,

I didn't have the .html files uploaded to my webserver for a lot of the games. I've uploaded all of those files now (I think) so if you just change the .swf ending on the links to .html the games should load. If I've missed any files and you can't get to certain games, just leave a post telling me which ones and I'll see if I can upload them. I hope the kids enjoy the games!

Caroline

Oh, I have another game posted - actually...I have 3 games for which I used the same questions and then told the kids they could choose the format in which they wanted to play. Here are the links to the .html files:

Context Clues, Figurative Language, Analogies, and Comparatives & Superlatives - Hoop Shoot

Context Clues, Figurative Language, Analogies, and Comparatives & Superlatives - Teacher Fling

Context Clues, Figurative Language, Analogies, and Comparatives & Superlatives - Grade or No Grade

I have passed all these links to our English Department and they are very enthusiastic about using them.

Thanks for sharing them with us. biggrin.gif
